The Indian stock market found itself in a tight spot on Monday, largely influenced by the swirling winds of Donald Trump's tariff uncertainty. Despite the global apprehension, the Nifty 50 managed a marginal climb, closing at 25,461, while the BSE Sensex edged up 9 points to finish at 83,442. The Bank Nifty, however, saw a slight dip, ending at 56,949.

Amidst this cautious atmosphere, some stocks demonstrated remarkable resilience. Hind Unilever, Tata Consumer, and Nestle emerged as Nifty's top performers, showcasing their strength in a volatile market. On the flip side, BEL, Tech Mahindra, and ONGC felt the brunt of selling pressure, concluding the session as the day's major laggards. Notably, trading volumes on the NSE cash market were significantly subdued, down 13% from the previous day and marking the lowest activity since March 17, 2025 – a clear indicator of the prevailing moderated sentiment.

The broader market echoed this subdued mood, with both the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap Indices experiencing minor losses due to profit booking. The Nifty Midcap 100 Index fell by 0.27%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 Index saw a 0.44% decline. Market breadth leaned negative, with more declining stocks than advancing ones, reflected in a BSE advance-decline ratio of 0.72. Sector-wise, FMCG, Oil/Gas, and Realty indices gained traction, while Media, IT, and Metal sectors faced headwinds.

Expert Market Outlook

"The Nifty 50 index continues its sluggish trend, demonstrating consolidation within a very narrow range during intraday trading, ultimately closing flat," observed Shiju Kuthupalakkal, Senior Manager of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher. He emphasized that the crucial near-term support for the Nifty remains firmly anchored around the 25,250-25,300 zone. Kuthupalakkal anticipates a potential revival, with a positive upward movement towards 25,700 and 26,200 levels once a decisive breach above the 25,650 mark is confirmed.

Commenting on the Bank Nifty, Kuthupalakkal noted its initial volatility, encountering resistance near the 57,150 zone before settling into a range-bound movement, just shy of the 57,000 mark. He highlighted that the 56,000 zone continues to be an essential support level that needs to be sustained. A breakthrough above the 57,600 resistance level could pave the way for fresh targets of 58,500 and 60,000 in the coming days.
